Mariusz Buczma / PL

I am really pleased that photography I submitted to the competition has been appreciated. This is a great pleasure for me.  I love all kinds of music especially jazz and blues. Music accompanies me almost all of the time. I don’t have many occasions to photograph music events but when I do, I photograph them with pleasure. Usually I photograph totally different type of pictures mostly interior design and products. In my free time I take portraits, acts and landscapes photographs, also analog once. Working in the darkroom is still the real pleasure to me.

Pablo Reyes / CL

Chilean photographer, a professional member of the Jazz Journalists Association, finalist of the Jazz World Photo 2018 and 2019, and collaborator with All About Jazz. Dedicated to jazz photography since 2011, and specialist in color management. He has specialized in heritage conservation, so he is also dedicated to the photography of art objects, and alternative photographic processes such as cyanotype and platinotype. Photography represents for him a way to preserve social memory, so the value of each image is measured over the years. In jazz photography, he seeks to represent the improvisation exercise of musicians, and unveil the secret and accomplice language that only occurs on stage.

Oleg Panov / UA

Born in 1962 in the family of an officer of the Border Troops. Already in my youth I began to study film photography. While studying at the Higher Military School in Moscow, he also photographed a lot. I’m a freelance Jazz Photographer, jazz photography is my life!!! Winner of the Jazz World Photo 2017 competition.

Didier Jallais / FR

Up until now, my profession of dental surgeon (Well, no one is perfect!) has not left me much time to pursue my numerous passions, which include sports, music, piloting an helicopter and traveling around the world. But above all other interests, photography, and particularly the photography of jazz and other improvisational artists, has always occupied a central part of my life. Since, to my knowledge, no one in my family (not my father, mother, nor even my grand parents) took photos, it makes perfect sense that I myself would be absolutely fascinated by photography!I have been drawn to this art since my adolescence, but my practice really took off with the arrival of numeric photography. Back in 2014, I entered the Jazz World Photo Competition with a picture of Sonny Rollins taken at the Marciac Jazz Festival. To my great surprise, I was awarded the First Prize! And subsequently, this honor allowed my photography work to be appreciated and welcomed at numerous festivals and by some marvelous artists, including Jazz in Marciac! My entry this year is a portrait of the extraordinary young musician Vincent Peirani, together with his magic accordian. I feel that this picture perfectly captures the famous quote of Louis Armstrong: “What we are play is life”

Markus Lackinger / AT

Born 1961 in Salzburg / Amateur photographer/self-taught
I started listening to jazz at the age of 15 and, at about the same time, I began to discover my interest in photography. In 1982, I began volunteering at “Jazz im Theater” in Salzburg, which was the predecessor of today’s Jazzit Music Club. After many years of a nomadic existence at various locations in Salzburg, the Jazzit found a permanent home in 2002. It was then that I became more actively involved in concert photography. My intention was to provide photographic documentation of as many concerts as possible that were held at the Jazzit Music Club, and to capture the countless magical moments in pictures. In doing so, my goal is always to be as unobtrusive as possible, so as to not disrupt the concert itself. For a number of years, I have also been involved as a lighting engineer at the Jazzit – a wonderful complement to my activities as a concert photographer. In the meantime, I frequently take photos outside of the club itself, for example at the “Jazz & the City Salzburg” jazz festival, at “Inntöne”, at “Musik beim Wirt” in Fornach, as well as at the young Salzburg music festival, “Take the A-Train”, which takes place at, and close to Salzburg Main Station. In 2017 alone, I was able to capture 98 concerts in photographs. The photo of Joe McPhee that was submitted was taken at the concert “DKV-Trio feat. Joe McPhee” at the Jazzit on 17.11.2017. This is my first participation in a photography competition. Now, as always, my work is on a voluntary basis during my free time.Until now, I have not been in a position to host my own photo exhibition – despite multiple offers – simply due to a lack of time. My photos have been published in various print media and, of course, on my website as well as flickr at Flicker.

Anna Rezulak / PL

Freelancer photographer fascinated by music and street photography. She likes small, intimate jazz concerts, where patiently awaited moments bring unexpected and surprising portraits of artist. Anna runs a photo-blog “Focus on art” where she interprets events in her point of view. On daily bases she is involved in entertainment and corporate photography.

“They’re alike in their improvisation and their spontaneousness. They happen at the same moment that you’re hearing something and you’re seeing something, and you record it, and it’s frozen forever!” (William Claxton)Andrea Rotili, remembering these words of William Claxton, one of the undisputed masters in the history of American photography, recounts the meeting between music and photography. Born in Sant’Elpidio a Mare (FM) and a resident of Morrovalle (MC), a lover of jazz music and photography, being able to unite both in harmony and immortalizing musicians performing on and off stage bringing out all of their state of mind.“I felt the need to express through a click of the emotions I felt listening to the live music.”Studies in computer science and attendance of workshops with the best national and international photographers and masters in photo / editor, improved its technical and creative skills. With a collaboration born with a web / International magazine, it was credited to Italian and international festivals which have allowed him to deepen knowledge in the field and work now with musicians and manufacturers of musical instruments and creation of photo and cd, photo and social networ-ks and catalogs.  He has created and organized several exhibitions: Civitanova Marche (FM), Sant’Elpidio a Mare (FM), Monte Urano (FM), Ancona, Czech Republic and Tunisia. In 2015 with the photo of Enzo Pietropaoli at the Teatro Morlacchi in Perugia during Umbria Jazz 2014, he won first prize at the JAll WORLD PHOTO, an international photo contest that allowed him to so widespread expand his work nationally and international.  In 2016 had the honour of being part of the jury that awarded the “JAZZ WORLD PHOTO”, once again on the podium in 2017. Marion Tisserand / FR

Thanks to the influence of her father who was photography lover and her father-in-law who was himself photographer, Marion Tisserand couldn’t escape the picture virus! Passionate about drawing, she spent her childhood and her adolescence with a pencil in one hand,a camera and an enlarger in the other. At the end of her architecture studies, she began to work with musicians during concerts or for various graphic projects (album covers, Press Photos…). After a few years in the world of electronic and rock music, her passion for Jazz took over and the turned to various French festivals like Jazz à Vienne which she’s been working with since 2002 as a freelance photographer and sometimes as columnist for different newspapers or specialized webzines. Her joys? Convey the emotion of a concert in pictures, share these sometimes magical moments with the public but also find some time to create more personal, intimate, less realistic pictures often by the use of back lights or reflection effects. This picture of Renaud Garcia Fons was taken on August 7th 2015 in the South of France during the Crest Jazz Festival. The concert in a duet with The Andalousian pianist David Dorantes was a pure moment of magic. The complementary character of both artists was obvious and their pleasure to play together as well. This set mixed finely the delicate touches with the strength of the rhythm, played with the purest humility. A real moment of happiness.

Seung Yull Nah / KR

Born in Seoul, Korea in 1971, is a photographer of performing arts industry. Growing up in a musical family where his father was a conductor of the National Chorus of Korea and his mother a musical actress, music has always been in his life. Even though he studied sculpture in the university, music was always in his mind as a friend. Around that time, Seung Yull Nah was absorbed in guitar after watching performance of Trio Paco de Lucia, John McLaughlin and Al Di Meola. It made him determine studying abroad in Spain. He went over to Spain to study classical guitar in Joaquin Turina conservatory in Madrid having a mind to be a jazz guitarist. He practiced so hard to make up a late start, but his hardworking caused a finger injury. As a result, he had to wrap up 7-year-long life of Spain and started a new life as a photographer back in Korea. He took his first step as a photographer by taking picture of musicians on stage. He toured with Youn Sun Nah, a preeminent jazz vocalist and his sister, all around the world. Seung Yull Nah still admires and longs for musicians on stage, so he keeps following his eager to music as a photographer. His work of art comes from his experiences of expressing a wide variety of musical elements. His camera itself is a small theater where musical melodies are visually harmonized. Seung Yull Nah works as an official photographer at Jarasum International Jazz Festival, National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts and many more theaters. Also, he held four solo exhibitions about jazz and collaborates with a lot of musicians.

Ariele Monti / IT

I was born in 1969, I’m not a professional photographer, but I’m an enthusiast for sure. I love shooting pictures at concerts and recording the emotions I feel during the performances. I‘ve observed a lot of great photographers during the concerts, and they inspired me in different ways. Personally, I try to make visual record of the feeling of space and of a moment in time. My real passion is music: I’m a member of an association called Area Sismica, that has been organizing concerts of many different genres, from jazz to contemporary music, from radical improvisation to electroacoustic performance, etc for more than 26 years in Forlì (Italy). In the past years, we have organized over thousand concert performances, among them Stefano Scodanibbio, David S.Ware, Fred Frith, Rohan De Saram, Otomo Yoshihide, Tom Cora, Rob Mazurek, Henry Cow, Yannis Kyriakides, Bob Ostertag, and Evan Parker. This photo I submitted for the competition is of Danielle Roccato, in my opinion one of the greatest doublebass player currently active, a musician who moves from contemporary classical (dozens of compositions have been dedicated to him) to free improvisation performances. My photograph is from his performance with the Swedish trombonist Ivo Nilsson that was organized by Area Sismica on November 1st 2015.

He has developed photo reports with jazz musicians and manufacturers of musical instruments. Andrea Palmucci / IT

I was born in 1974 and I spend my life between Imperia, Rio de Janeiro and Jazz. The analytical approach learned in the study of chemistry and pharmacy prompted me to summarize the research of the soul with the photographs. Studies and continuous insights moved the center of gravity of my existence in the world of photography, the constant element of my daily life. The dazzling meeting with Enzo Obiso, the diploma of the Academy of Fine Arts as well as explorations of the video art have contributed to a growing day by day continues today even after graduation in 2005 and the subsequent transfer to Rio. I still remember when, for the fi rst time, Enzo showed me The hand of the man by Sebastião Salgado. There, I decided that my job and my passion would have coincided with photography! I worked for two years documenting the precocious health situation of the capital Carioca, investigated in many travel social reality through the eyes of children, a theme that I studied in Brazil with institutions that deal with Meninos de rua. From many years I work with jazz music, photographing the sound of live concerts and international festivals. I think that a part people feels excited about seeing my pictures because all my effort is devoted to capturing the soul, the heart of the people, the core of the sound in the case of Jazz, the immensity of the landscapes. My aim is to convey the uniqueness of that intimate lifeblood to shake the soul of the beholder. Why Jazz? The relationship between musician and instrument in the melodious improvisation is a magical combination, imponderable as visceral photographer musician because it is the only one to really feel the sacred fire of the instrument.

Didier Jallais / FR

I always, more or less, practised the photography but my work of dental surgeon and my multiple activities and passions (I play clarinet, I am private pilot of helicopter, I practise running and marathon etc.) have never left me a lot of spare time. I travel a lot but especially in India where I use to work voluntarily as dental surgeon. I have just made my 30th journey there! And it is in Benares, four years ago, that I met a French famous photographer, Xavier Zimbardo to whom I showed my photos, what I made practically never before. He encouraged me to continue and he gave me confidence. Since we became great friends and he continues to give me precious advice. Being a musician and liking particularly jazz, it was obvious that I want to photograph musicians in concerts. Unfortunately, without accreditation, it is extremely difficult to have the authorization to photograph. So, I made great majority of my concert photos of jazz at Marciac, a very big world-famous festival.

Rainer Rygalyk / AUT

Born 1953 in Wr. Neustadt, studied musicology, journalism and political science at Vienna University. He founded the Austrian Jazz magazine “Jazzlive“ in 1983. Jazz photographer since 1972. Exhibitions in Wiesen, Nickelsdorf, Wien, Paris, New York, Burghausen, Tokyo, Boston, Washington, Buenos Aires, Mar del Plata, Zürich and Pescara since 1980. Music in colour and shape shown by the visualized version of Jazz – When Rainer Rygalyk declares his love to music. Up to now Jazz photography dealt mainly with the portrayal of musicians. Rainer Rygalyk uses a completely new method. In his photography the music itself makes its way on to the screen. In the tense and passionate relation between musician and musical instrument, the instrument becomes all-important and assures us of one final conclusion: music can as well be seen. (NDR)

Miroslav Novotný / CZ

I agree with the opinion of the U.S. singer Earl Thomas who says about himself „Writer must write, painter must paint and I must sing.“ Well, and I must take pictures! This picture was taken at well established festival Blues Alive in Šumperk last November. Earl Thomas was the most photogenic figure there, with his stage dance performance. As usual at such events, conditions for taking photographs were hard. However, patience brings rewards. And this is how this picture originated.
